Don, I dont know, it seems like people rather be opportunity costs. They rather follow the rules of society, than to see where it is flexible. They say things about rules, but not everyone's following them. I believe the famed Malcolm X epiphany, that you mention, was a demonstration of Malcolm X transcending his 'small fly' mindset. He got trapped by it he was acting like a 'small fly'. His rebellion against the established order was carried out like a 'small fly'. Once he had the epiphany he didn't play by the same rules as before. He still rebelled against the established order but he carried it out like a 'bigger fly'.

The rulebook changed. He spoke out against laws before, but did it in the wrong way.

I believe that small flies have to figure out how to be comfortable while confined; to acquiesce is necessary to their survival, if they are to play by the same rules. They will succeed a little have a little family, if so inclined, help the world a little, and save a little money for their proverbial 'fade to black' moment. I think there are way less examples of those who walked the well worn path that achieved unparalleled levels of success at what they wanted to do.

I think it just takes 'balls'.

If one's goals are outside of that the acquiescent, institutionally assigned, rule book, I agree that a person will have a set of rules to follow. I just don't think they will be the same set of rules as a person who will walk that similar well worn path. They may be crucified or pre-judged for their decision to make a different choice, but life is about taking a chance to do win on your own terms.

All of the above, followed rules, but those rules were slightly different from the traditional rules followed by those who carry the fingerprint of the above men in their everyday actions - without knowing it. They found alternative sets of rules that transcended the rules of their neighbors.

Usually, one would say that these men are statistical anomalies. However, I think it takes a certain level of gall to avoid the well worn path, in order to embark on a totally different one. You have to want to kick the suburban barbecue, Corona and meaningless outings; channel one's focus on an ideal and attack that ideal wholeheartedly without a shadow of a doubt.

If someone ties to instill a doubt in walking the lesser worn path cut of that limb and let it die on the cold earth. There is more than one way to Rome.

"Do this, do that, or else" only applies to the people that believe it. I may not be the brightest candle on the birthday cake, but I'm not the dullest either.

The truth is my dear, it IS a matter of "Do this, do that, or else", however, it's a matter of internalizing such a state of being, when it is particularly initiated outside of yourself (such as in incarceration), and manifesting it as your own decision, therefore transumting any means to deter, into a specified use of progression. Malcom X, for example, had one of his great epiphanies while in prison, no? There will never be a life without rules. As there will never be a life without one's own ability to find their OWN in any environment or apparent restriction.

Nevertheless, I believe that you are merely recycling the arguments that the capitalist with whom you mingle put forth in order to undermine or rather sidestep the issue that
self-determination goes beyond picking a book and turning off the tv. Rather, one of its functions is picking the "right" book, not the Eurocentric book, not the colonists book, not the racist book, not the sexist book, not the capitalists book. When the great European fathers wrote their great philosophical essays, you and I were not the target audience. Actually, we were the "Other." The people to be subjugated during the day while the those in power powdered their nose and talk about equality among white men. Therefore, as a person with subaltern perspective, I am not advocating for either socialism or capitalism. Instead, what I am challenging is the notion that "we," as colonized people, fit within the philosophical confines of theories which are not representative of our distinctiveness in relation to dominant European traditions of thought. Consequently, the whole idea of "waking people up" presumes that people are merely to lazy to pick up a book. The indoctrination of people of color has many manifestations; the media is probably just one. But the mechanics of white hegemony, that is, what moves its wheels goes much deeper than an argument about television's affect on people's sense of self. Yes, television, literature, etc are all tools that the people in power employ to indoctrinate. These are the tools. But what is the machine? Who is operating the machine? As a result, the argument is no that people don't know better. The argument is that people have been conditioned to accept a modified version of capitalism that has a semblance of progress, like the Chinese totalitarian state has a semblance of communism to masquerade totalitarian capitalism. There is a lot of complexity in these issues. Read Antonio Gremsci, Frantz Fanon and Michel Foucault (Discipline and Punish), Angela Davis (Are Prisons Obsolete?)
